2023 Georgia Alpha Founders Day/Golden Legion

By Chapter News, Gallery, News

Thanks to the many of you that attended our annual Founders Day/Golden Legion event at Peachtree Golf Club. We had a great turnout highlighted by members of the 1973 pledge class that were honored for 50 years of membership. The Golden Legion ceremony was conducted by the fraternity CEO, Sean Wagner with the assistance of our actives and John McGoogan #1485. Sean also filled us in on the great things going on nationally with Phi Delta Theta. We will get a date soon for next year’s event so you can put it on your calendar.

Georgia Alpha Annual Fund – Last Call!

By Gallery

I hope each of you is doing well and enjoying this Spring weather. The actives at Georgia Alpha are back from Spring Break and concluding the current semester. As you likely recall, being young and in Athens at this time of year is pretty special.

The Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) will be generating our annual newsletter in May as the semester concludes, which will provide various reports from several of our key officers. We will also be closing out the 2022-2023 annual fund on May 1, 2023, so that we can report to our donors. Thanks to many of you that have helped us this year. We plan to complete the laundry facility upgrades along with several other projects when the chapter house closes in late May.

Please see the list of current year donors below. If you would like to support us or increase your giving level, you can click here to give securely online. If you prefer to pay by check, please click here to download and print out a giving form to mail with your check.

In addition to our upcoming newsletter, we plan to host our annual alumni lunch on Saturday, August 25. Details of this event will follow as the event draws near.

On behalf of the Chapter Advisory Board (CAB), we appreciate your input and support.

Georgia Alpha Annual Fund and Chapter Updates

By Chapter News

On behalf of the Chapter Advisory Board (CAB), I hope your New Year is off to a good start. Coach Smart and the Bulldogs certainly held up their end in finishing off the season with their second consecutive Natty. I enjoyed seeing many of you out in LA and, other than the awful weather, it was a lot of fun.

As you hopefully recall, the CAB, in conjunction with the UGA Foundation, awards needs-based grants each year to our members. The funds are paid from a fund based at the UGAF that dates back to the late 1940s when our alumni initially began raising funds to help finance the Chapter moving to the old South Lumpkin location. Funds were used over the years for house improvements at that location. When the Chapter moved to our current location at 130 Greek Park Circle, the recurring maintenance work was included in our base rent. The UGAF suggested awarding our members grants to help them offset the costs of their education. The Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation now is the largest Greek scholarship fund at the University. A special thanks to our CAB member, David Boohaker #2092, who oversees this selection process each year. We are pleased to announce a total of $20,000 has been awarded to the following brothers:

Connor Kastner #2552
David McQuaig #2619
Mason Griffith #2565
Everett O’Gorman #2589
Will Howley

The Chapter just enjoyed their Winter Formal and are back in the swing of things with an active schedule for the spring semester. We are working with them about changing the format of the annual alumni luncheon we host at the end of August. The actives would like to center this around a golf outing locally. They are working on this and will get you updated information as soon as possible. Meanwhile we are in the process of getting the laundry room renovated and need your support through our 2022-2023 Annual Fund. Thanks to those of you that have made gifts and are listed below. For those of you who haven’t, it is never too late, and we could clearly use your help. We have 17 members living at 130 Greek Park Circle sharing a residential grade washer and dryer. We think you would agree that they deserve better than that.

2022 Founders Day and Golden Legion Ceremony

By News

On the weekend of November 12-13, the Chapter held its Fall parents’ weekend in Athens. On Saturday we held a brunch at the Terry Business School where the parents were able to see the Six Ninety veranda that we dedicated last year. As part of the donor agreement, they allow us access to this space once a year and our initial use turned out perfectly. We had a great turnout and another wonderful meal provided by our alums at Epting Events.

On Wednesday, November 16, we held our annual Founders Day and Golden Legion ceremony at Peachtree Golf Club. We were joined by the President of the General Council, Moe Stephens who gave an update about his experience as the head volunteer of the fraternity which entails a ten-year commitment. In addition to conducting the Golden Legion ceremony, Moe presented the Oxford Trophy which the chapter won this past summer as the best overall chapter in the country.

It was a couple of great events and thanks to John McGoogan #1485 who helps organize and promote the Golden Legion ceremony each year.

Annual Alumni Luncheon | August 27, 2022

By Gallery, News

The Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) and chapter hosted our annual alumni luncheon this past Saturday. We had a great turnout, and more importantly, saw alumni that hadn’t attended before. The luncheon is set for the Saturday before Labor Day weekend every year. Thanks for all that came as well as to Lee and Daniel Epting of Epting Events who once again catered the event. They did a great job again this year.

Our next alumni event will be our annual Founders Day/Golden Legion event on Wednesday, November 16 at Peachtree Golf Club from 6:00-8:00 p.m. We will be recognizing our actives for winning the Oxford Trophy for the outstanding large chapter. The trophy will be presented by the President of the General Council, Moe Stephens.

We will provide additional information as the event draws closer. Thanks for your support.

Go Dawgs!!

CLICKE HERE to read the article that was written about the dedication of the Six Ninety Veranda this past year in the Terry College magazine. It is the first gift of this kind by any Greek organization in the history of the University System of Georgia. The legacy is the pride it gives to our current actives and those to follow in the history of our chapter on the UGA campus.

Thanks to the many of you that joined us for the dedication, and to Bill Beckham #1627 who came up with the idea and made it happen.

As a reminder, we hope you will plan to attend the annual Alumni luncheon on Saturday, August 27 starting at 11:30 a.m. We will send our detail information as the event approaches.

On behalf of the CAB, I hope you are having a wonderful and safe summer.

Georgia Alpha 150th Anniversary

By Chapter News

Georgia Alpha celebrated its 150th anniversary this past weekend with several events. Thursday evening November 4, Brother John McGoogan hosted the annual Founders Day/Golden Legion event at Capital City Club-Brookhaven. It was our first one since 2019 due to COVID and we had a record attendance. The highlight of the evening was the Golden Legion ceremony that was conducted by the fraternity CEO, Sean Wagner with assistance from the chapter actives. Twelve brothers received this award and reflected on how much the fraternity and the friends associated with it have meant to them. Sean also presented to chapter president, Matthew Ikard, an accolade from GHQ recognizing Georgia Alpha’s celebration of its 150th anniversary. It was noted that in addition to being the oldest chapter in continuous existence at the University, Georgia Alpha is also the fourth longest of all Phi Delta Theta chapters. Additionally, Sean gave an update of what was going on both locally and on a national level. The fraternity has added chapters at several campuses in Georgia which only helps to make the “brand” better.

On Friday, November 5, the Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) hosted a cocktail party at Lee Epting’s venue, The Hill. Over 200 of the current brothers and dates attended the event and had a wonderful time. They greatly appreciated the support to have this event.

On Saturday November 6, The Terry College of Business dedicated the Six Ninety Veranda at Ivester Hall. As reported previously, ten brothers donated the required funds for naming rights for this 1700 square foot open space that is virtually the footprint of the previous chapter house at 690 South Lumpkin. The event included an acknowledgment from Dean Ben Ayers who welcomed a group of 70 plus alumni, actives, and their families. It was a wonderful event despite an early start and chilly weather.

It was a great weekend and thanks to the many of you that attended these events. We will be sending out our annual newsletter in the about a month so please make sure we have your updated information. Click here to do that. As always, we would appreciate you passing this along to other brothers that may not have done this so that they can receive information about upcoming events in 2022.

On behalf of the CAB, I hope you and your family have a safe and wonderful holiday season and look forward to sharing more information with you in the year to come.

Founders Day/Golden Legion 2018

By Gallery

The Georgia Alpha alumni and actives held their annual Founders Day on Wednesday, March 21 in Atlanta. The event was highlighted by the induction of nine brothers into the Golden Legion which recognizes 50 years of membership. The ceremony was conducted by Sean Wagner, Chief Operating Officer of Phi Delta Theta. After the ceremony each inductee shared their experiences as an active and alumni.

Additionally Sean gave an update on the status of the Fraternity nationally as well as a question and answer session.

This event continues to grow in attendance each year. If you missed it, we hope you will join us next spring.
